Regata Storica di Venezia 2007 - il Corteo
Being a city that lies on water, competing on it has been a natural consequence in ages. Then the first arranged competitions took place for fun around 1300, among the residents constrained to go to the Lido in order to train themselves with the bow and the crossbow. Today the rowing is the venetian sport par excellence.
The term "regata", race, seems to derive from "rigata", a term introduced in order to specify the exact position of the boats that, at the start, should have been kept in line.
The most important "regata" is certainly the "Regata Storica". This occurence, that remained unaltered through the ages, sees even today a great involvement of the city of Venice that gathers along the Grand Canal adorned for the occasion. In this wonderful picture the various types of venetian boats challenge themselves, to conclude with the last challenge, the most felt one, which is the one between the "gondolini" with two oarsman on each boat.
The run: the start is from Sant'Elena, and after passing San Marco the boats go through all the Grand Canal right to the stake, the point where they turn over and come on the way back to finish their run in front of the jury, which is placed on the "machina", a big floating platform in the Grand Canal.
In the video below, filmed by Jump in Venice during the Regata Storica on September 2nd, 2007, is possible to admire the suggestive procession of various types of boats that precedes the competitions since ever. A unique spectacle able to recall the ambience and the magnificence of the bygone Venice.

Essendo una città che vive sull'acqua, gareggiare su di essa è una conseguenza del tutto naturale da secoli. Le prime gare organizzate presero quindi vita per gioco intorno al Trecento, tra gli abitanti obbligati a recarsi al Lido allo scopo di esercitarsi con l'arco e con la balestra. Oggi la voga è lo sport veneziano per eccellenza. Il termine "regata" pare tragga origine da "rigata", termine introdotto per specificare la posizione delle imbarcazioni che alla partenza dovevano essere "in riga".
La regata più importante è sicuramente la "Regata Storica". Questo avvenimento, rimasto immutato nei secoli, vede ancora oggi una grande partecipazione da parte dell'intera città di Venezia che si raccoglie sulle rive del Canal Grande addobbato a festa. In questa splendida cornice i vari tipi di barche si sfidano fino a giungere all'ultima competizione, la più sentita, che è quella tra i "gondolini" con due rematori.
Il percorso: si parte da Sant'Elena, dopo essere passati davanti a San Marco si percorre tutto il Canal Grande fino al paletto, il punto in cui le barche si girano e ritornano sulla via precedente fino ad arrivare alla giuria che è alloggiata nella "machina", un grande palco galleggiante posto in Canal Grande.
Nel video qui sotto, realizzato da "Jump in Venice" durante la Regata Storica del 2 settembre 2007, è possibile ammirare il suggestivo corteo di barche di vario tipo che da sempre precede le gare; uno spettacolo unico capace di rievocare l'atmosfera e gli sfarzi della Venezia che fu.
